Shenzi As, an 11-1 long shot, and harness racing driver Dan Noble picked the perfect time to gut one out first-over in capturing the $18,100 final of the Richard Brandt Trot for fillies and mares at Scioto Downs Thursday evening.
The second race feature began with A Doll Face (Kayne Kauffman) going right to the lead from post six with the race favorite Ozma (Aaron Merriman) grabbing the two-hole spot as they sped to the opening quarter mile in :27.3. It was then that Noble pulled on the right line and sent Shenzi As first-up from fourth place as they went by the half mile in :58.2.
Melodically moving up towards race leader A Doll Face, Shenzi As was in second on the outside at the three-quarters in 1:26.3. By the top of the stretch, Shenzi As was one length from collaring A Doll Face and those two went at it head and head down the stretch. When they came to the wire, Shenzi As showed true grit after being parked out most of the one mile trot and won by a neck over A Doll Face in 1:55.3. Fiesty Pistol (Trevor Smith) closed well to be third.
