Sunny Sicily (Sunshine Beach) and harness racing driver Steven Genois captured the featured fillies & mares’ pace at Vernon Downs on Friday (May 31).
Milleniums Girl (John MacDonald) got to the first quarter first in :28.1. She used a :28.4 second quarter to lead to the half in :57.0. Lady To Watch (Leon Bailey) came first-up going around the final turn. Sunny Sicily ($11.00) made her move second-over. Milleniums Girl was first to three-quarters in 1:25.1.
As they reached the stretch Sunny Sicily fanned out three-wide and went all out after the leader. Second place finisher Milleniums Girl dug in but Sunny Sicily came flying and blew right on by in deep stretch to win in 1:54.3. Lady To Watch finished third.
Sunny Sicily is a 7-year-old mare owned and trained by Fannie Saul-Beaulieu. It was her second win this season. She now has 13 career victories.
