TORONTO, JULY 17, 2023 – The Ontario Sires Stakes (OSS) was in harness racing action across the province this weekend, with Gold and Grassroots racing at Woodbine Mohawk Park and Rideau Carleton Raceway.
On Friday night at Woodbine Mohawk Park, there were eight OSS divisions, two Golds for freshman male trotters and six Grassroots dashes for two-year-old male pacers. Check out our full recap.
On Saturday the Grassroots returned to Woodbine Mohawk Park with two divisions for two-year-old trotting colts and geldings.
Coppereagle (Muscle Mass) started the night by winning race one, a $23,000 division. The gelding showed impressive closing speed, charging home in 28.3 to win by a nose over Come On Stanley.
No One Knows Us Stable owns Coppereagle who was making his pari-mutuel debut for trainer Stephen Bossence with James MacDonald driving. The betting public made him a 4-5 favorite and he stopped the clock in 1:59.2.
The second Grassroots division was won by North of Nine (Royalty For Life). The colt was blasted to the front from post four by Tyler Borth, and held a three length lead through a 28.2 first quarter.
He faced a challenge from Gaelic Piper in the middle of the mile, and Alexander in the stretch drive but went on to win gate to wire in 1:59.2 paying $37.25 for the upset win. Douglas McCarthy owns North of Nine and he is conditioned by Keith Jones.
On Sunday evening, the three-year-old trotting fillies were at Rideau Carleton Raceway for Gold and Grassroots racing.
The favourites in both Gold divisions were beaten, starting with Muscling Vegas in race three, a $100,400 division.
Mass Hysteria left well from the rail position for driver Trevor Henry, and maintained that position the entire way, fending off a first up challenge from Muscling Vegas (Muscle Mass) and beating runner-up HP Extra Ice by two lengths.
It was the first win of 2023 and third lifetime for the filly who now has over $240,000 on her card in OSS earnings. Trainer Kyle Bossence co-owns her with Daniel Culp and William Pendleton.
HP Extra Ice continued her strong season with the runner-up result, improving her record to 4-4-1 through 11 starts and moving her 2023 OSS earnings to just shy of $80,000.
Trainer Ben Baillargeon co-owns the Alarm Detector filly with Claude Hamel, Santo Vena, and Nunzio Vena.
In the second $101,300 Gold division in race eight, Righteous Resolve led gate to wire, and passed the line first before being placed second due to veering into the passing lane entering the stretch.
Climb The Pole (Kadabra) driven by Jody Jamieson was placed first. It was her first OSS victory in three career attempts, and fourth overall this season. Carl Jamieson trains the filly who he co-owns with his son Jody, Steve Heimbecker and Aaron Byron.
James MacDonald was piloting Righteous Resolve for trainer Matt Bax. Her OSS record moves to 5-2-0 in seven career starts. Through two seasons in the OSS, she has earned over $365,000 for owners Bet Max Stables and Benenati Inc.
The pair of Grassroots divisions were won by Smashin Racquets and Northern Charlotte, both driven by Bob McClure.
Smashin Racquets (Resolve) won race five a $22,600 division by three lengths in 1:56.0. The filly, an Awesome Acres Stbds homebred, is trained by Kye Fellows. She paid $2.80 for the win.
