The ninth edition of the Vic Hayter Memorial Trot, in honour of the late Stratford, Ontario hotelier was contested Sunday afternoon (July 21) at Clinton Raceway under sunny skies and in front of many family and friends who gathered to pay tribute to long time standardbred harness racing owner and fan.
Eight trotters went postward in the tenth and final dash of the day and it was mayhem off the gate with breaks by Like Chaos and Cool Clifford, opening up a clear path for 30-1 Charmbo Prince (Royalty For Life) and driver J. Harris.
A first 1/4 of 28.4 had Charmbo Prince and Mercutio hooked up in a speed duel on the front end. Mavin Hagler and Brett MacDonald put the pressure on late, but it wasn’t enough and Charmbro Prince claimed his second Vic Hayter Trot Victory for owner Pam Forgie and David Wilkinson of Goderich in 1:58. He paid $62.30 to win.
The event, a Fundraiser for the Stratford Perth Humane Society raised over $3000 for the organization near and dear to Vic.
Race fans were also treated to a miniature horse race on track during the days card. The Young Gunz made an appearance with six mini’s battling it out and in the end, it was Elizabeth and Patches crossing the wire for first.
Live harness racing continues with the return of the Wiener Dogs in the Dachshund Dash on Sunday, July 28.Ā Two heats will accompany the days ten race card, with a final following race 7. More details and information can be found here.
