After 48 previous attempts, young harness racing junior driver Tom Bamford drove his first winner tonight at Addington, when he slipped up the passing lane on maiden trotter Lavra Segil to register his first victory in the sulky.
Bamford was over the moon with the win describing it as ‘pretty special’ when talking with Nigel Armstrong from Harness Racing Unhinged after the race.
“I can tick that one off the bucket list. It has taken a while but it is pretty special,” he said.
Lavra Segil (Sundon) was a five start maiden with mixed form but had been racing ok without much luck prior to the race tonight.
“We have had a bit of trouble with her steering at the last couple of starts, but last week I was actually quite happy with her.
“This week a small field and we were able to settle pretty handy and she was just too quick up the lane,” Bamford said.
LAVRA SEGIL / TOM BAMFORD REPLAY
Lavra Segil beat Sassy Star and driver Kim Butt by a length and a quarter with early leader Show The Way and driver Kyle Cameron holding on for third.
Trainer Peter Shennan came out of training retirement this year after a 21 year hiatus to train Lavra Segil and get his second lifetime training win. His only other win came in 1998 when he trained Tartan Lustre to win at Kaikoura.
It was a night of milestones at Addington with drivers Sheree Tomlinson and Samantha Ottley also notching up significant driving achievements.
Tomlinson chalked up win 200 winning comfortably with Hazer in Race Four, while Ottley broke through the 600 win barrier winning with Webs Reactor and then a couple of races later getting win 601 with the Mark Jones trained Kowhai Shadow.
